Google says there are some emergency situations where a call to the police is not appropriate and a text message may be more practical. Google has announced a partnership with emergency technology company RapidSOS to gradually roll out the ability to send text messages to 911 using RCS to U.S. emergency call centers starting this winter, starting in areas that don't currently support texting to 911.

Google says the advantages of using RCS to send alarm text messages are as follows:

Verify that the emergency request has been delivered and see if the emergency responders are responding to the message

Send high-resolution images and video to give first responders a clearer picture of the situation

Share precise location and other information with the Android Emergency Location Service so emergency responders know the exact location
